Question about how current density is calculated on an electrode?


I am building an electrolysis cell and I am unsure how to calculate the current density on my cathode...

It is a ring 6cm high, 12cm in diameter and only 2mm thick, and it is around a solid cylindrical anode.

So to find amperes/decimeter should I count both sides of the ring or just the side facing the anode? They are both surrounded by the salt melt.

I know it is a basic question but I am new at this and can see reasons to go either way!

You only count the surface area that is in the solution or melt and not the whole of the electrodes surface area. As all surface area will proved charge to the solution weither it be facing or not. If one side is cover in tape that stops electroelectrial work being carried out then that area is not included.
