pieces of sodium and magnesium are dropped into seperate water filled tubes(A and B). Tube A bubbled vigorously; Tube B does not.
a, which tube contains the sodium metal?(I think its A)

b. write an equation for the reaction in the tube containing the sodium metal. What type of reaction is ocurring in this tube?

a) You are correct; sodium metal is in test tube A. The reaction between sodium metal and water is so vigorous and exothermic that a fire can start in the tube (this has happened in organic labs before, sometimes even burning down the building), so don't do that!

b) 2Na + 2H-OH -> 2NaOH + H2; highly exothermic (which means the energy of the products is a lot less than the energy of the reactants, so the excess energy goes to heat and bubbling you see.)

The reaction is between the sodium and the water to form sodium hydroxide and hydrogen.

It is a violent, exothermic reaction and the hydrogen will probably ignite..
