What kind of human activity can impact the natural environment of a region?

Answer:
washing with soap and detergent

we wash it down our drains and it goes back to rivers and lakes.
Movement can often bring unwantedstuff - for eg just walking in may introduce plant spores that could bring an invasive plant species.

Furthermore, when people are bringing in fruit and stuff - rats, bugs and other vermin could come along - these can wreck an ecosystem that is not used to them.

Another big thing is ballast water from ships - they suck up water at their start and blow it out at their destination - thus transferring marine life.
Any kind.
Depends on how you look at it..

If man evolved then he's a natural creature and everything man does is in effect.. natural.

so.. Global Warming (assuming it is due to man... ) would also be a natural result of evolution.
The invasive species mentioned above have huge impacts. Over 95% of the biomass in the San Francisco Bay is non-native. Zebra Muscles in the Great Lakes cost utility companies millions every year by clogging up water intakes (water for cooling and supply).

Deforestation causes drought inland. Forests "recycle" moisture as weather systems move in. Evaporation from the forest later falls as rain inland. There is not enough water held in ranchland or other developed land to provide enough moisture for land further in from the ocean. There are continuing drought conditions southwest of the Amazon Basin. In China, they have realized, too late, the problem and have curtailed some of their deforestation.

Development in urban and suburban areas causes erosion in area water ways. Water runs off of pavement and buildings instead of soaking into the earth. This causes more run off, creating higher levels in streams and rivers. There are ranchers around Colorado Springs that loose many acres a year because of excessive erosion due to development miles away. Many local governments now have codes requiring any newly developed land to be able to retain the same amount of water after it is developed, in a retention pond or other method.

Development can favor certain species. With migratory animals, this can give them an advantage over other species in their entire habitat.

Damns change ecosystems forever. Entire species of salmon are lost. Food chains are disrupted. Damns can actually increase the risk of erosion.

Anything you do to reduce what you consume helps (goods and energy).
Simply breathing puts an awful lot of CO2 into the environment. Unfortunately it has disastrous consequences if you stop. What to do?
Any kind, humans always leave there mark one way or another. That is why they say to tread softly.
tons of things construction,pollution,hunting... down trees for lumber you name it and it can probably affect the inviernment in some way or another
Plant more trees.

So many unemployed people. Instead of paying millions of dollars on TV programs and "save the world" campaigns. Just use that money to pay people to plant and maintain trees and plants.

If those trees and plants produce something to eat, then you have a bonus.

i always thought major cities should have more pot plants around their window displays, and the top of the buildings should be miniature parks in order to help the environment.
You answered your own question. Give yourself points.

Human activity impacts the natural environment of a region.

Smoke from cigarettes, burning through factories and from fires in the hearth, trails, roads, crops and cows replacing native vegetation, noise pollution, water pollution, air pollution, soil contamination. What part of the natural environment don't we impact?

Like you said. Human activity impacts the natural environment of a region.
ENVIRONMENT+HUMANITY

Deforestation ,desertification ,polution of the Air, Water and Soils .mass exstinction of flora and fauna

WATER POLUTION

FIRSTHAND CONTAMINATION

Rivers and Lagoons

millions of batteries are thrown in the rivers and Lagoons by night fishermen
1 small penlight battery contaminate 10.000 litres of water

raw sewage added to water flows like cannals and rivers ,

trash dumped on rivers edges ,

Industry contaminates practically unchecked

farmers using agro chemicals (fertilizers ,herbicides & pesticides)then deforrest and the rains washing the topsoils impregnated with contaminants into the rivers

thousands of women that do the washing in rivers using harmfull detergents.

farmers dump acidic coffee husk into the waters which kills millions of fish ,

on the coasts

oil spills that contaminate coastal waters,

Oceans
industrial wastes that are dumped into deep oceanic trenches

SECONDARY POLUTION

changes in water temperature enhances harmfull algae,(remember the red tide)

and kills many fish who are critical to temperature ,when sea water enters lagoons here in Mexico many fish die ,due to sudden temperature changes

------------------------------...
SOIL POLUTION --MONO CULTURE PLANTING EXHAUSTS AND CONTAMINATES THE SOIL
all plants and trees require certain chemicals and secrete others .
if there are too many of one specie ,the requirements are too much of the same and the soil gets exausted.

Also if there is too much of the same chemical output the soil gets poluted,
and so bio diverse systems are always the healthiest

Apart from that ,this kind of farming uses pesticides ,herbicides and fertilizers,

because to much of one specie also attracts to much of one specie of preditors and disease, and is combatted with chemicals

And too much of the same chemicals are demanded by the soil so fertilizers are added

On top of this heavy machinery is used which compacts the soil raising the salt content to the surface ,

The plough opens the top soil and this dries out .leaving it vulnarable to wind and water erosion (the dust is easily blown or washed away) and all micro organisms needed to build the soil are killed

so the destruction of lands is not only polution

other poluting factors are contaminated rain .and contaminated ground waters because of landfills
and contaminated beaches because of oilspills and sewage outlets,

And in the cities people continue to mix organic wastes with their trash ,this is responsible for 70% of soil contamination
------------------------------...
AIR POLUTION

the smoke from industrial chimneys, the smoke from any fire
the escaping gasses from spraycans ,the fumes from all internal combustion engines in the world ,all contribute to air polution

.we live in a closed system, polution that is produced in one place can end up on the other side of the world.
there are aircurrants continuesly moving all around the globe, and 5 miles up in the air is a layer which can hold things as big as frogs ,that have been picked up by super evaporation ,that can come down somewhere else.

On the North pole contamination has been found in the ice ,that could have come from Newyork,
if people burn plastics or tires the contaminated smoke will go up and join aircurrants that take it someplace else.

MASS EXSTINCTION OF FLORA AND FAUNA

Of the earth's estimated 10 million species, 300,000 have vanished in the past 50 years. each years, 3,000 to 30,000 species become extinct.

A lot of human activity is speeding that up since we tend to overpower all the other species in one way or another.

Some reasons why animals are being wiped out ,in the forrests are:

The hunting of exotic species for the consumer market
only about 10% of the animals caught survive

The hunting of animals for food by settlers

Forrest fires ,that have started because of slash and burning of forrest ,to clear the land for farming, had gotten out of control

The loss of Habitat because the conditions have changed ,e.g less humidity because of surrounding farmlands ,or overpumping of rivers for human use(farming and utility)

Animals and fish deaths ,because of contamination of the waters ,

And the Animals will continue to be trapped ,as long as people keep buying the exotic animals

CLIMATE CHANGE
And now many animals are becoming sick because of changes in temperature ,which inderectly and often directly (because of desertification )can be blamed partly if not more on human intervention.
vital links in the food chains are disapearing affecting other species further along in the chain

90% of the feral (wild) bee population in the United States has died out.

In the Netherlands bee diversity is down 80 percent in the sites researched,
Bee species are declining or have become extinct in Britain."
Numbers of wildflowers that depend on pollination have dropped by 70 percent.

If bees continue to die off so would the crops they support and with that would ensue major economic disruption and possibly famine.

Bees are not the only polinators but if these things are happening to bees we can bet on it that other insects are also in trouble ,on top of this many people are spraying for mosquitos ,with drastic effects .

So much follows the insects in the food chains ,that we can expect a lot of very bad changes in the environment .

------------------------------...
DEFORESTATION
Can it be stopped,Almost impossible

the Indians or local people would cut everything down and burn the forrest to replace it with harmfull short term farming killing the soil in no time

expanding populations and expanding farming ,that has to keep pace with the expanding populations are very strong forces that encroach upon the rainforest's
clearing them for farming and settlement areas .

that and the giant networks of roads that have exchanged forests for asphalt all over the planet

In Mexico is a famous jungle that the Media has been trying to save for years
the Naturists ,and the government ,keep watch .laws are made for protection the wild and to forbid logging.
TV put out a series of documentaries
there are campaigns in the News papers
and all of this has not made the slightest difference

Rainforest's always are in third world countries and always in third world countries corruption and the need for money s highest

the jungles gets smaller by the day
more and more farmers move in .and burn the trees
it is an impossible situation
as long as there is poverty and an increasing birth rate in these regions the destruction will continue

they are too easily tempted to sell of exotic animals to the unscroupelous people who buy them.for the markets that exists

Deforestation occurs in many countries in fact everywhere where there are or where forrests and wild life:
in Africa (because of poverty and war as well as greedy farming )
Borneo because of the expensive timber
india ,China ,Mexico ,South Americas Amazonia,
Europe because of civilization,USA,Japan because of overpopulation,

Now the destructions continue with the mono culture plantations for the production of Ethanol
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

Madagascar a botanic paradise is now destroyed
the exotic animals sold or killed ,the forest slash and burned for agriculture ,the coastal water poluted by topsoils washed fronm the denuded moutains by the rains.

we must look for ways to improve economic situations on the edges of Nature .

The only way to preserve the forrest is to devellop eco tourism under strict control that has limited acces ,and use the local people in the concept as guides ,hotel staff and get them to start home industries of artifacts .

Eco tourism is the only concept that profits by a healthy back ground with out harming it
------------------------------...
DESERTIFICATION
desertification is also a result of bad agricultural methods and deforrestation and over grazing as well as forest fires ,or war

regrowth is very dificult under a hot sun new growth instanrly withers and in the desserts the nights are freezing cold, whch also kills young plants

IN THE PAST
------------------------------...
The sahara used to be forrests
Arabia ,Irak ,Iran used to be fertile lands in biblical times
Ghengas Kahn burned all the forrests and filled the well with water and so turning vast lands into dessert.
The Spanish Armada deforested Spain
.The Phoenician fleet deforested Lebanon

Humans have been making deserts for a long time
and by no means are decreasing this

Two major desserts in northern china are growing together making one giant dessert and, causing dust storms so making thousands of people refugeese.

Fantastic Question. What can I add to Byderule's answer? It says it all. You get a star for a great question.
none
Everything we do impacts the environment: How much we hunt, what we grow, what we destroy in order to build or grow crops, what we introduce into the environment can also have a major negative impact. If you introduce something into an environment were it will not have a natural barier that introduction can take over and not let anything else live. Did you know that wasps and bees are not indigionus to the Americas. Wasps are a very big problem because they do not have a natural barier here so they continue to spread north every year wich kills many people who are unlucky when they distereb there nests. We dont have a natural defense that can keep its population down to a piont were it is not such a big problem. I learned this on either the discovery channel or a show called nova.
