Your view as an environmental science teacher?

350- to 700-word response to this question: As an environmental science teacher, how would you respond to someone who tells you (a) that he or she does not believe in biological evolution because it is "just a theory"? How would you respond if another student states, (b) we should not worry about air pollution because through natural selection, the human species will develop lungs that can detoxify pollutants? In your responses, be sure to provide factual evidence from earth's history (Miller, 2005, pp. 87-90).

Answer:
> (a) that he or she does not believe in biological evolution because it is "just a theory"?

i) It's a scientific theory for which there is a considerable amount of evidence. It is the best explanation for the observed diversity of life. It is well-supported by other sciences, such as paleontology and biochemistry.
ii) You don't have to believe in it. However, it is part of our science curriculum in this state, so you must learn it. You will be tested on what you've learned. Your grades on these tests will determine your final grade in this class. Your grade in this class, along with your other grades, will determine which colleges you can go to, and which careers you will have later in life.
So, learn the material. It's going to be on the test.

> (b) we should not worry about air pollution because through natural selection, the human species will develop lungs that can detoxify pollutants?
I'm more concerned about your health and mine today, than about whether or not your great-great-great grandchildren will be better equipped to deal with smog.
It may be that lungs would evolve into polution breathing rather than air breathing organs but what would we look like if that happened?
