What is the scientific purpose of the cockroach?

There is no scientific purpose of the cockroach. They are just survivors and will survive no matter what happens. They were here when the dinosaurs walked the earth and will be here if and when humans are extinct.
to eat our trash
Well... scientists do get hungry sometimes.
nothing in Nature is for a scientific purpose
it is for ecological ones
cockroaches are componants in the food chain
many things eat them .like scorpions and birds .moles, armadillos etc.
Did not think it had a scientific purpose.
Just keeps the exterminators in business
bksrbttr is pretty much right. Except that they don't eat *only* our trash. Cockroaches, and other insects like them, tend to keep things from getting out of hand by disposing of other creatures waste, be that dead creatures that they help get rid of or just food crumbs left from larger animals.

They are also a food source for other creatures that eat them.
Cockroaches recycle dead and decaying matter. They may be used as a food source by some people. Africa, perhaps? "Insects often contain more protein, fat, and carbohydrates than equal amounts of beef or fish, and a higher energy value than soybeans, maize, beef, fish, lentils, or other beans. According to a 2004 United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report, caterpillars of many species are rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron, as well as B-vitamins. In some African regions, children fight malnutrition by eating flour made out of dried caterpillars. Pregnant and nursing women, as well as anemic people, also eat caterpillar species high in protein, calcium, and iron." If there are cockroachs in Africa, I bet they are being eaten, too.
