Which do you think would be warmer on a winter day when there is no wind, a thick forest or a grassy field?

Grassy field. Assuming that it is a clear day. The sun would be blinding and warm in a windless field. There would be none in the forest.

If it was grey, it would be unpleasant either way.

However, if you knew the climate would change, and it does, you would wish to be near the woods where you have materials to make homes. If you don't have tepees etc
I would think of forest because of the insulation. But I don't have evidence of that.
Interesting question but it really depends on if the sun is out or not. With sun: grassy field. Without sun, thick forest.
